Study Design

Requirements for eligibility:

  • Black/African-American woman
  • Resident of Washington, DC Wards 5, 7, or 8 or Prince George's County, Maryland
  • Overweight or obese: BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2
  • Above normal hemoglobin A1c: 5.7%-6.4% or above normal fasting plasma glucose (sugar): 100-125 mg/dL
  • Owner and user of smartphone compatible with the mobile app
  • Willing to use mobile app and wrist worn physical activity device for the study
  • Able to provide consent

Unfortunately, if any of the following bullet points are true for you, you are not able to participate in this study:

  • Medical condition, including unintentional weight loss, that may cause safety concerns
  • Diagnosis of diabetes mellitus
  • Fasting blood glucose (sugar) ≥ 126 mg/dL
  • Evidence of heart disease
    • history of myocardial infarction ("heart attack"), congestive heart failure, coronary artery stent placement, presence of disease on coronary angiography ("clogged arteries"), significant structural disease (e.g. hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, valvular heart disease)
  • Hyper- or hypothyroidism by routine lab screening
  • Unable to perform physical activity
  • Pregnancy
  • Currently participating in an exercise or weight-loss program (examples include Weight Watchers, NutriSystem or structured fitness training)
  • History of bariatric (weight loss) surgery
