About the Study

Who runs this study?

This study is being conducted by The Powell-Wiley Research Group Cardiovascular Branch of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) NIH.

The Principal Investigator of the study is Tiffany Powell-Wiley MD, MPH, FAHA, a preventive cardiologist and epidemiologist. This research is focused on the development of novel methods to improve heart health in at-risk, underserved populations most impacted by health disparities.

What is this study about?

The goal of this study is to test the use of mobile technology (mobile apps and wrist-worn physical activity devices) to increase physical activity and improve heart disease risk factors for those living in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan areas where heart disease risk is highest.

What kind of commitment is involved?

Initial visit: If interested in participating in the study, you will be asked to come to NIH for your initial screening visit to:

  • Share your medical history including information on health behaviors, existing heart health risk factors, and cardiovascular disease history.
  • Record vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure) and anthropometric measures (height, weight, waist and hip circumference).
  • Receive a focused cardiovascular examination and an electrocardiogram.
  • Research blood draw to assess blood sugar levels and other diseases.
  • Complete a survey.
  • Receive a wrist-worn device and mobile smartphone app to measure exercise.
  • Receive instructions on how to use the device and mobile app to monitor your exercise.

You will be asked to use the wrist-worn device and mobile app for at least six months. Over this time, you will receive messages through the mobile app to encourage more exercise. You will also receive educational information about why exercise is important to your health.
