Introduction

Heart disease is a leading cause of death. Obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure contribute to heart disease. Diet and physical activity (exercise) improve heart health. You can reduce your risk of heart disease by increasing the time you spend doing physical activity per day or the number of steps you get per day.

This community-based physical activity intervention is designed using community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles. Community-based interventions can reach those most at risk for obesity and obesity-related heart disease. Interventions based on CBPR principles develop in collaboration with community partners, allowing an intervention's components to be tailored to the unique needs of the community members. This is an intervention for African American women who are overweight or obese, are at risk for diabetes and who reside in Wards 5, 7, and 8 of Washington, D.C. and adjacent areas within Prince George's Country, Maryland. These are areas where obesity prevalence is highest and resources for physical activity and healthy nutrition are most limited. This six-month study will find out if mobile health technology can increase physical activity. Examples of mobile health technology used in the study include a wrist-worn physical activity device and phone-based mobile applications or apps. All of our work is done in collaboration with an established community advisory board who is involved in planning and implementation of the study and the interpretation and dissemination of findings.
